Healthcare Usage and Impact of the Ketogenic Diet for Children with Epilepsy in Ontario

The ketogenic diet is a well-established and effective treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy. However, the diet is underused because many hospitals lack the qualified dietitians needed to administer the diet.

Dr. Sharon Whiting and her colleagues have designed a study comparing the healthcare usage of children with epilepsy before and after starting the ketogenic diet. They found that children used fewer healthcare resources after starting the diet, which resulted in reduced healthcare costs.

This research is crucial in understanding the benefits of the ketogenic diet on the healthcare system and finding ways that we can increase its access across Ontario. This would mean investing in more dietitians and better support systems for children starting the ketogenic diet.
